1. Butler Britain is travelling to Moscow.

The delegation’s visit has been confirmed. The timing is within the next three to four weeks. Pavlov has agreed in principle to host the visit, but — and this is the first cause for concern — he’s less than enthusiastic about it. We interpret his position as meaning that he sees the visit as an obligation he cannot decline without consequence, rather than as something he has sought. He’ll receive them. He’ll oversee what they see.

Note from D.: Pavlov’s reservation is consistent with what our contacts in Moscow have described as his increasing impatience with the British end of the operation, specifically their tendency to move faster than he can manage Kuznetsov’s position. He is not pulling back from the architecture. He’s controlling the pace.

2. Friggington has been in direct contact with Federov.

Someone has requested a meeting. The channel was not the Butler Britain group structure. This is a private approach from Friggington to Federov, made outside the formal delegation framework.

Those of you who’ve been following the Federov thread will understand why this matters. Federov is not Pavlov’s man. He never has been. Pavlov keeps him close precisely because he cannot afford to have him unsupervised. A private channel between Friggington and Federov that bypasses Pavlov’s hosting arrangements is either careless or deliberate. Given what else we’ve found this week, I’m not inclined to believe the former.

3. What Dmitri found on Federov.

Three separate contact threads, each worth your attention.

(a) Federov and Rizzo.

Federov’s been in contact with Salvatore Rizzo regarding nominations of candidates for the European Centre, specifically ex-Warsaw Pact candidates. As far as we can reconstruct, the conversation concerned the staffing pipeline into the Centre from Eastern European member states. Rizzo is not interested in the administrative side of things. He’s establishing a following inside the Centre before it formally exists.

Note, this is consistent with what we already know of Rizzo’s operating method. He does not wait for institutions to be established before placing his people in them. By the time the paperwork is signed, he’s already filled the key positions.

(b) Federov and Zaslavsky.

Contact has been confirmed. Investigators have not yet fully reconstructed the nature of the exchange. What we can say is that this is not their first point of contact, and the timing — coinciding with the Butler-Moscow visit — is no coincidence. Zaslavsky’s involvement in this matter is more extensive than we’ve yet determined. Flag for immediate follow-up.

(c) Brodsky and the gangs.

This is the one that kept me awake.

Dmitri has established links between Brodsky and criminal networks involved in nuclear material, drug trafficking, and the sex trade. These are not separate networks that just happen to intersect at Brodsky. They’re all part of the same network. The same individuals operate across all three areas.

For those who’ve read the Shadow Economies material, this is not just theory. It’s the same workforce and financial channels that we documented as part of the privatised infrastructure — now confirmed as active around one of our principal subjects.

Note from D, the nuclear dimension requires particular care. We’re not in a position to confirm what material is involved, the quantity of it, or the stage at which Brodsky’s contact sits in the chain. What I can confirm is that the individuals concerned are central figures in the trafficking and narcotics networks, not peripheral ones. The nuclear contact appears to be a newer development. Whether this represents an expansion of the operation or a separate arrangement that has found the same node remains to be seen.

4. Gaia’s source — Friggington’s plans in Moscow.

Those of you who have been following Gaia’s management of the Friggington assistant — who has, as Gaia puts it with characteristic economy, “the hots for her” — will not be surprised to hear that the relationship has continued to produce results.

Through this source, Gaia’s obtained information about Friggington’s programme in Moscow. Two elements are particularly relevant to this memo:

• Right-wing meetings. - Friggington’s schedule includes engagements that are not part of the Butler Britain delegation programme. These are private and ideologically framed, consistent with the Friggington profile established during the family investigation. The individuals he’s meeting are not directly affiliated with the Russian government. They occupy the same intersection of nationalist politics and organised finance that’s been a recurring feature of this operation.

• An intimate meeting with Brodsky. Outside the Butler Britain group structure. Not a formal session. The source’s description suggests something closer to a private conversation than a negotiation, which, in Friggington’s world, means either a confidence is being shared or a deal is being confirmed.

When read alongside item 3(c), I find the Friggington-Brodsky private meeting the most difficult part of this picture to set aside. Friggington’s aware of Brodsky’s network. If he’s meeting with him in Moscow outside the delegation framework, it’s no accident.

5. Is Brodsky moving against Pavlov?

I should be careful here, as I’m working from inference rather than confirmed intelligence. However, this inference is well-founded.

Brodsky’s separate contact with the criminal networks in item 3(c) Federov’s private channel to Friggington in item 2. The private meeting between Friggington and Brodsky in item 4. Zaslavsky is also involved in item 3(b).

Pavlov has positioned himself as the architect. Brodsky’s always been the disruptor that Pavlov manages at a distance. It looks as though Brodsky is establishing his own constellation, using the Moscow visit as cover for contact-building that Pavlov has not approved and may not be aware of.

If that’s what’s happening, the implications run in two directions. For Pavlov, it’s a direct challenge to his control of the operation. For us, it means that what we thought was a single architecture with a single centre of gravity is beginning to fracture.

I’m not yet prepared to call this a betrayal. But I’m watching out for it.

D. Note: I agree with Arti’s interpretation. Brodsky’s never been comfortable with Pavlov’s pace or constraints. In particular, the nuclear thread is the kind of venture that Pavlov would veto — it introduces risk that the Triple Edge strategy cannot absorb. The fact that Brodsky is pursuing it independently suggests either recklessness or a statement of intent.

6. Sanjana — agreed protocol, for Charles specifically.

Still in hospital, Sanjana’s confirmed she agrees with Charles’s proposal: her attackers are to be transferred to Vergani’s secure compound in Valtellina.Vergani’s been informed. The transfer awaits confirmation of the logistics from his end.

We’re noting this here for the record and to make the Group aware. Operational details are being managed directly through the Vergani channel. The Group does not need to take action on this matter — it is for information only.

Charles sat in his Den, with the jar containing Fred on his desk. The room smelled faintly of the English breakfast that was waiting on the dumbwaiter. Security held the attackers — for now — but Vergani’s message still weighed heavily on his mind. Transfer them. Do not wait for London to remember who it serves:

Narcotics. Human trafficking. Names that never quite surfaced. Charles knew how things would end if they stayed here. Bail. Silence. A procedural shrug.

His phone rang.

‘Dr Keane,’ Gaia said. ‘Friggington’s office has been calling Sanjana all morning. They want you in. Eleven tomorrow.’

Charles exhaled. ‘Of course they do.’

Pre-Meeting Consultation

They met briefly at a coffee bar near Horseferry Road, the kind of place where nobody looked twice at anyone.

Gaia slid the wallet across the table.

‘Fenchurch Street to Southend-on-Sea. Outbound and return. Receipts. CCTV time-stamped. Gillian cross-checked the pier cameras — you’ve got a convincing limp, and the posture of a man who’s stood still for too long.’

Charles thumbed through the contents. Fishing worms. Fish and chips. A coffee he did not remember drinking.

‘Convincing?’

‘It does not need to be,’ said Gaia. ‘It just needs to exist.’

Home Office Interview Room

Friggington chose an interview room in which to hold the meeting with Charles.

‘Informal,’ he claimed.

The office, panelled in dark wood, exuded quiet confidence. There were no insignia on the walls. No flags. Power did not need reminding.

Charles had barely crossed the threshold before one of the men by the door stepped forward.

‘Routine,’ the man said, already patting him down.

‘I’ve just been through security,’ Charles replied.

Friggington did not look up from the papers on his desk. ‘Just humour him.’

When Charles reached the desk, Friggington finally stood up. Not to greet him. To reduce the distance.

‘What were you doing in Epping Forest?’ he asked.

Charles blinked. ‘Epping?’

‘An incident,’ Friggington said lightly. ‘Interrupted. Unpleasant. One of my people thought he recognised you.’

‘Your people should socialise more,’ Charles said. ‘I was in Southend. Day off. Fishing.’

Friggington smiled thinly. ‘Fishing.’

Charles placed the wallet on the desk and tipped it gently. Tickets, receipts, and folded slips of paper spread across the surface.

‘Fenchurch Street,’ said Charles. ‘Southend Pier. Lunch. Bait. All very dull. I recommend it.’

Friggington did not touch the papers. He did not need to. He already knew what they were.

In Cambridge, behind the glass, Arti watched the feed.

‘He’s not challenging the evidence,’ Arti said. ‘He’s gauging how confident Charles is about it.’

Dmitri frowned. ‘And how many people helped him?’

Friggington stepped back, hands clasped.

‘You understand how this looks,’ he said. ‘An incident. No suspects. No clarity. And then there’s you, inconveniently present.’

‘Am I?’ Charles said. ‘Or am I inconveniently elsewhere?’

There was a pause. Long enough to establish hierarchy.

‘This will not go any further,’ Friggington said. ‘For now.’

‘Relieved,’ Charles replied.

Friggington’s expression hardened slightly. ‘You’ve developed a habit, Keane. You appear on the verge of disruption. Then you vanish behind paperwork. That invites attention.’

‘From people like you?’

‘No,’ said Friggington. ‘From people who do not need meetings.’

Another pause. This one was colder.

‘We’ll revisit this,’ Friggington continued. ‘Not as an investigation. As a review.’

Charles nodded. ‘I’ll look forward to it.’

‘I doubt that.’

The meeting ended without ceremony.

Outside, the air felt sharper. Gaia was already there, leaning against a low wall with her phone in hand.

‘No tails,’ she said. ‘No immediate pressure.’

‘For now,’ Charles replied.

Back in Cambridge, Arti closed the monitoring window.

‘They did not touch him,’ she said. ‘That’s not good news.’

Dmitri nodded. ‘It means they’ve classified him.’

Vergani’s message

That evening, Vergani’s message finally came through.

‘You’ve made yourself unmanageable.

That’s a compliment.

Come to Italy.’

Charles did not reply straight away. He looked once more at the den: the shelves, the quiet, and the illusion of permanence.

London had not expelled him.

It had simply withdrawn its tolerance.

He packed lightly.

Valtellina would suffice.

Following the recent attacks, which culminated in the murder of Angus Caruthers, Charles requested that Sanjana elevate security measures and arrange an MI6 safe house for their meeting.

‘This bears Friggington’s fingerprints: it’s the third death of MI6 agents in as many years to occur in proximity to one of Friggington’s publicity shows...’ Still suffering from her injuries, Sanjana paused to contain her anger. ‘It was such an audacious, cold-blooded murder. I’ll use that term, because that is what it was. I’m at a loss as to how he thinks he can escape it.’

Gaia watched her superior fight back her emotions. Charles understood what Sanjana was battling. He switched on the monitor to link up with Arti in Cambridge.

‘Arti, have you made any progress?’

‘Nothing from the room. I believe MI6 forensics are dealing with that aspect. What we do have is a clip from the main event showing Angus Caruthers leaving the banquet hall with a woman. Unfortunately, she had a light scarf covering her head, which made facial recognition difficult.’ Arti posted a blown-up image on the monitor, which was connected to a wall screen.

‘Goodness! That looks like Ann Fretwell. I cannot believe it!’ Exclaimed Charles.

‘We could not find anything on the GCHQ database.’ Arti intervened.

‘That’s what Angus told me.’

‘But we did manage to find a copy of her CV, which led us to her university graduation.’

Arti projected two images, of the banquet and the graduation, side by side.

‘I’d say they’re almost identical.’ Arti placed another photo on the screen. It showed a group of graduates in gowns on the lawn. In the background, Ann seemed to be arguing with a man whose face was hidden by her body.

‘Who took the photographs?’ asked Gaia.

‘A company in Leeds, which has since gone bankrupt. But we’re working on it.’

‘Thanks, Arti. There’s something suspicious about all this. First, there were the photographs from Laura in Geneva of someone who called herself Elena but resembled Ann Fretwell, and now this.’ Charles drew in a breath and ran his hand through his hair. ‘I cannot accept that I was such a poor judge of character when I hired Ann. I cannot believe she was involved in Angus’s murder either. But if someone wanted to expose Ann, this is how they’d do it.’

‘But that seems to be the evidence. Can we cross-check it with the other two mysterious deaths of MI6 agents?’ asked Sanjana.

‘We’re working on it. Dmitri is working diligently to glean something from the Moscow databases. By the way, where’s Laura?’

‘She’s on her way, Arti.’ Gaia smiled sarcastically.

‘We need her here to revisit the incident in the mountains when she went skiing with Elena.’

‘What’s that, Charles?’ asked Sanjana.

‘It’s something you missed while you were in hospital recovering. Laura suspected that she, rather than Elena, may have been the target. The issue is further complicated by the fact that the bullet used was specially issued to the DCRI anti-terrorist group.’ Charles sat back, as though reflecting on what he’d just said.

‘What do you think the connection is?’

‘Not sure. Angus had got hold of Laura’s suspicions and was investigating any DCRI links to Friggington and his associates. He never got back to me. We were due to meet today.’

‘I do not wish to provoke any trouble within MI6 by examining Angus’s recent activity. Is there a way you can get around that problem, Arti?’

‘We’ll put that on our urgent list, Ms Jaitley.’

Charles checked his phone. ‘Laura’s been delayed. She’s very disappointed for having booked a flight. She’s switching to the train.’

‘Her and her damn climate change paranoia.’ Gaia interjected, always ready to criticise Laura.

Sanjana returned to the main discussion. ‘The evidence is pointing in Ann’s direction, though.’ Sanjana interjected. ‘Can we cross-check this with the other two mysterious MI6 agent deaths?’

‘We’re working on it,’ Arti’s voice crackled through the monitor. ‘Dmitri is deeply embedded in Moscow databases, trying to uncover something. It’s slow going, but he’s thorough.’

‘Let’s move to the next point: Friggington,’ Sanjana said, cutting through the conversation with a growl. ‘Our dear friend has fled to Moscow. Arti, have you got anything on your end?’

There was a note of satisfaction in Arti’s voice. ‘We accessed the airlines’ database. Friggington was booked on an early morning flight to St Petersburg via Frankfurt, accompanied by a woman and his two henchmen.’

Charles leaned forward, his attention sharpening. ‘St. Petersburg?’ Ann Fretwell’s former place of residence. The place where she first met Federov.’

‘Sorry to disappoint you, Charles, but they changed their tickets at Frankfurt Airport and flew to Moscow instead.’

‘Are you able to monitor them in Moscow?’

‘We’ve traced a booking for three nights at the Radisson Royal, formerly the Ukraine Hotel.’

‘Only the best for our friends. Can you do more than that?’ asked Charles.

‘We’ve hacked Friggington’s phone and those of his two sidekicks.’

Charles thought for a moment. ‘Good. Where is Laura at the moment?’

Arti answered instantly. ‘What’s on your mind, Charles? You cannot send her there alone.’

Suddenly, Laura interrupted the conversation. ‘I’ve been following you both for the past five minutes. Tighten your security. For your information, Dr Keane, I’m stuck in Geneva in the new apartment provided by Ariane Deschamps. I’ve just missed the TGV back to Paris, from which I’ve just arrived. At this point, I think it’s best I stay here and focus on why I came here.’ Laura paused before continuing. ‘But if you want me to go to Moscow, just sort yourselves out.’

‘Cheeky bugger,’ chuckled Charles.. ‘Is it feasible, Arti? I mean, from a security point of view. Laura and I’ve worked out a plan for such an opportunity.

‘Give us a moment. I’ll see what Dmitri can sort out.’

Charles paused for a moment and looked at Sanjana. He could tell she was worried. ‘Sanj, are you all right? Can you go along with this plan?’

‘As long as we do not create a diplomatic incident. After all, Friggington’s a junior minister in the UK government.’

‘He will not be involved directly.’

We’ve just overheard Friggington. Federov has invited him alone, without assistants, to his dacha on the outskirts of Moscow tomorrow night.’ Arti sounded pleased with the achievement.

‘If you can arrange a backup plan, I could implement it tomorrow evening and catch the first flight to Scandinavia or elsewhere afterwards. Perhaps Gaia would like to join me?’

Gaia nodded enthusiastically, but Sanjana shook her head and wagged her index finger in the negative.

‘Let’s sum up. Sanjana took over. ‘MI6 has cordoned off the Park Lane hotel suite and taken the body to our facilities for an autopsy. Arti and her team will continue analysing photos and investigating Ann Fretwell’s backstory. Provided that Charles and Cambridge can assure me that there will be no diplomatic mishaps in Moscow, and above all that Laura’s life will not be threatened, I’ll approve her mission. But get her out quickly after whatever you intend to do.’

Laura interrupted . ‘Just received a call. I’ll have to stay here.’

We initially assumed the Friggington mythology was decorative — an affectation layered onto power acquired elsewhere.

That assumption was wrong.

The archival trail does not begin with James Friggington, nor with his son. It begins earlier, and it begins deliberately.

The first bearer of the Friggington title was almost certainly fraudulent. His sudden death in a plane crash removed both the man and the questions. What followed was not collapse, but consolidation.

The real architect was James Friggington’s uncle.

In the early 1930s, the uncle married a wealthy American heiress. The marriage followed a recognisable interwar pattern: capital stabilising a title; a title insulating capital. What distinguishes this case is not the arrangement itself, but the company it kept.

Across multiple archival sources — invitations, guest lists, press photographs — the uncle appears repeatedly at aristocratic and royal-adjacent receptions in Britain and on the Continent. The same names recur. British peers. American businessmen. Industrial figures whose sympathies with authoritarian and fascist regimes were, at the time, neither secret nor disqualifying.

These were not neutral gatherings.

They were alignment spaces.

The uncle’s disappearance during the Second World War — officially “missing in action” — completed the laundering process. No body. No reckoning. No post-war inquiry. The title passed to James Friggington intact, cleansed of its origins.

What James inherited was not just a name, but a method:
legitimacy through association; protection through silence.

Seen in this light, later behaviour — exaggerated lineage claims, hints of royal proximity, confidence that scrutiny would dissolve into etiquette — ceases to look eccentric. It is learned behaviour, tested over decades.

The persistence of Tsarist or Romanov adjacency rumours fits this pattern precisely. These claims are not meant to withstand examination. They are meant to function socially — to distract, to flatter, and to discourage deeper inquiry.

That they circulate particularly well in transatlantic intelligence environments may be the least surprising detail of all.

A secondary pattern emerges through the Zaslavsky family’s extended European connections.

Archival traces place distant Zaslavsky relatives at several of the same interwar receptions attended by Friggington’s uncle, particularly those held on French soil in the early to mid-1930s. These appearances are neither prominent nor frequent, but they recur often enough to suggest more than coincidence.

What distinguishes these gatherings is their ambiguity. They were framed as cultural, philanthropic, or social events, often hosted by families whose political positions were deliberately opaque. British aristocracy, American capital, and displaced European wealth appear repeatedly in the same rooms. Titles and money circulated. Allegiances did not need to be declared.

In this context, France functions less as an ideological actor than as a social clearing house — a place where legitimacy could be rehearsed, capital repositioned, and futures quietly reconciled. The disappearance of documentary trails after 1945 appears not accidental, but shared.

Seen alongside the Friggington inheritance pattern, this adjacency helps explain the persistence of lineage narratives that are resistant to verification yet remarkably effective in practice. What survives is not proof, but familiarity — a sense of belonging that discourages scrutiny.

The Friggington–Zaslavsky relationship in the present does not appear opportunistic. It appears recognitional.

II. CHARLES’S INTERNAL RECOGNITION BEAT

Charles read the second message twice, then closed the screen without replying.

Prague was not nostalgia. It was a warning — one she would not repeat. The phrasing was careful, almost academic, but the timing was wrong in a way only she would recognise.

He understood then that whatever had reopened between them would not stay open for long. Not because she doubted him — but because she trusted him enough not to explain.

I’ve replayed the meeting in Scotland more times than is healthy. Not the attack — that’ll come later — but the question that preceded it.

Two names were mentioned: One Italian and one Russian. I shut it down immediately. At the time, I told myself it was instinct. That was not true. It was pattern recognition.

The men who attacked me were not improvising. From what Gaia later described, their answers to questions during interrogation were poorly structured yet familiar. Debt. Obligation. Access. They spoke like intermediaries, not zealots.

I do not yet know whether this was Friggington’s doing or something else that fell under his remit. The distinction matters.

What I do know is that the curiosity in that room in Scotland was premature, and I will not address it again until I understand who else might be listening.

Preliminary analysis suggests that the remains found in the orchard in Kent are most likely those of:

Andrei Sergeyevich Novikov.

He was a Russian-born soldier formerly of the Russian Expeditionary Force, born c. 1893–1895.

However,

Novikov was not the man who later lived as ‘Lord Friggington’.

Instead:

We met in the Den this morning. Place secure, double-coded. Charles insisted on ordering a full English breakfast from Toni’s café downstairs. It arrived by dumb waiter — plates steaming, sausages first, Charles muttering: “This is how one does intelligence work. Protein, not bloody croissants.”

Laura’s opening concerns

Laura started with Gillian. She doesn’t trust her. “She moves like a butterfly. There were too many close moments, too many secrets shared in hushed tones.” Charles pointed out that his father had been a long-standing friend from university, but he agreed: “Sincerity isn’t her strong point.”

Summers & St. John-Smith

Laura asked how long Charles had known Jonathan Summers.

1. Charles only found out indirectly, through the work he had commissioned Das Khatri and two other investigative journalists to undertake during his voluntary retirement. Das had previously been married to Jonathan Summers.

2. Summers pretends to be a “clean accountant”, but Arti’s note reveals his true self.

3. Charles: “Summers and St. John-Smith are more involved than Arti knows. Brodsky doesn’t have much money left – he’s down to his last few billions. He has expensive butlers. There are too many flights to islands that no one remembers.”

Friggington family threads

Charles admitted he had reopened his suspicions of the Friggington clan. Parish records, gravestones, Swinethorn archives — riddled with holes. He suspects Guild money links back to Russia through this family tree.

Laura asked: “How deep?”
Charles: “Deep enough that if I’m not covered from the top this time, I’ll pack it in and go fishing in Brightlingsea.”

Anya & Scotland

Charles asked Laura to dig with Arti and Dmitri: find out what Anya’s father was doing in Scotland, late 1989, and what became of him and the mother. The registry only lists Anya. Too neat, too edited.

Berlin note

Laura produced a slip from Berlin archives. Name: James Friggington. Allegation: Charles had signed his death warrant in ’89.

Charles stiffened, admitted that was why he first contacted Laura and why he enlisted journalists after retirement: “This ghost keeps following me.”

“Our senior officer has evidence proving that, either willingly or unwillingly, the junior Minister at the Home Office has communicated via intermediaries to the Russians that the UK would not react if they decided to invade Crimea.”

The General could not restrain himself:
“What? Our intelligence — and that of our allies — suggests the Russians are already manoeuvring along the border. If these allegations are true, the idiot should be locked up immediately and the key thrown away.”

Sir Miles:
“While I agree with your sentiments, I have discussed the SIS position with the Chair. The situation is so precarious that we do not want to let the Russians know we’re on to Friggington. We believe he’s working with others. We have to strive to apprehend all those involved.”

Sir Bannister:
“Does SIS know the identity of these others?”

Sir Miles:
“We are monitoring several suspects ranging from oligarchs of ex-Soviet origin, right-wing groups in Europe, members of Butler Britain, the Mafia, and individual members of certain All-Party Parliamentary Groups. I can’t be more specific.”

Closing exchange

Laura pushed Charles: “Be open with me, or we’ll go nowhere.”
Charles: “I have suspicions, not evidence. Enough to haunt, not enough to stand in court.”

Laura walked over and hugged him.
Charles: “How did you get that ISC info? It’s hot off the press.”
Laura touched her nose and winked. “Now shall we try being a bit more open with each other?”

Charles groaned: “I need a bleedin’ pint. Let’s have one before we meet Sanja for lunch.”
Laura: “Sanja? How cute. Tell me about it.”
Charles touched her nose and winked back.
