I drove the final section alone. Franco had gone ahead with the others, which I was grateful for, as I enjoyed the silence despite the snow closing in on both sides of the road. I’d had enough of people for one day. Enough of being watched, protected, escorted, and monitored. Enough of everyone knowing exactly where I am.

Which brings me to Arianne.

She called this evening. Not to ask how I was — nobody does that anymore; it’s been filed under ‘irrelevant’ — but to inform me that she had heard I was at the compound. She said it as a statement. Satisfied, almost. I asked her how she knew. She said she had her sources, then changed the subject. I did not press the matter. I’ve learned that with Arianne, there are times when pressing yields results, and times when it does not.

But I’ve been sitting on it ever since because this location is not supposed to be on any official files. Vergani runs it that way deliberately. This suggests that either we have an informant — something Vergani neither confirms nor denies when I raise it — or Arianne has a line into the Italian operation that she has never once declared to me.

Three attempts in France. Two near-misses and one that came close enough to matter. The pathologist in Geneva clearly told me that the bullet was French and DST-modified. Not the kind of round that falls off the back of a lorry, but rather the kind that is carefully placed there. Someone in the organisation ordered that shot, enabled it, or looked the other way. When I confronted Arianne, she did not deny it with enough force. She merely held my gaze and moved on. This could be the behaviour of someone who is either innocent and too proud to be indignant, or someone who is very good at this.

Recently, however, I’ve been considering the opposite. What if it’s not Arianne? What if somebody is running an operation designed to make it look like her — to make me distrust my own coordinator, to fracture the French-British channel at exactly the moment it’s most useful? Keeping Laura and Arianne focused on one another, while leaving the network undisturbed, would serve their purpose. It would be elegant. The right-wing infiltration of the DCRI that Vergani suspects, and the names he won’t share, could provide the mechanism. Somebody inside the apparatus has access to DST equipment, knowledge of my movements, and is framing the evidence upwards, towards Arianne’s office.

I do not know. Both possibilities are serious. Together, they’re worse.

What I do know is that Arianne knew I was here tonight before I’d told anyone outside this compound. Gaia remains in London, and I cannot call her directly — I must go through channels I no longer fully trust.

Charles called earlier. Brief, precise, and already decided. He needs me in London. He said I should take the route through Paris — a contact was mentioned, but not named, and there was no need to. He said it should not take more than a few days. In that deadpan voice of his, he said, ‘Think of it as a working holiday.’ I did not laugh.

I cannot stop thinking about what he said at the Cambridge meeting before everything began. He said it quietly, across the table, just for me: ‘Laura, when this is finished, we should probably think about what comes next.’ I did not know what to say. I still do not.

He’s in that ridiculous den right now. Eating something awful. He’s got files he’s not supposed to have stacked around him. I’m completely certain that he’s the only person who still remembers how any of this actually works.

He’s probably right. And that’s precisely what frightens me.

During one of Gaia’s ‘expeditions’ to Skirbeck College, Cambridge, researchers discovered the following fragment among Leonid Zaslavsky’s personal belongings. It appears to be a private note written on the night of 09/11/1989. The original is undated. Attribution is uncertain. However, the handwriting matches samples held in the Cambridge Group archive. The room

They are celebrating in Berlin.

I am not there. I’m somewhere better — close enough to see what comes next, yet far enough not to be ensnared. Tonight, it’s all about the bubbles. Too much of it. For the past three hours, the television has been switched on, and no one has thought to reduce the volume.

The men in this room do not know what to do with their faces, and this is something they’re all struggling with. Some of them are trying to look pleased, but they’re not managing very well. Some of them are even managing to look concerned. Some people are doing both things at the same time. This is how a man decides if this is an opportunity to act or a problem to avoid before he’s decided which answer is more useful.

For more than twenty years, I’ve watched the people in this room. I know which of them have photographs I should not have, which of them have signatures on documents they’ve forgotten about, and which of them said what to whom in 1968 when the students were in the streets and certain people showed their preferences very clearly. They regarded me as a school dropout from an impoverished district of Paris. Embarrassing. Tolerated.

I tolerated their looks.

The family business

My grandfather left Russia after the Revolution with nothing and arrived in France with the one asset that’s served every Zaslavsky since: the understanding that information about people is worth more than money, because money runs out.

His son — my father — understood this in his own way. He was well aware of which side of history to be on in the 1930s, which associations to cultivate, which evenings to attend, and which not to mention afterwards. He was practical about these things. Ideology was more of a shield for him than a driving force. The engine was always the same: who owed what to whom, and what would it cost them if it became known.

I dropped out of school in 1963. Certain circles, including this one, hold it against me. What these people do not realise is that school teaches you what’s already been decided. The streets teach you what is being decided now. In 1968, when students occupied the Sorbonne, unions walked out, and the whole country held its breath, I stood on the fringes of the protests — not because I believed in anything in particular, but because the people on that side possessed the connections and opportunities I desired.

I’ve been building the file ever since. Twenty years. Ministers. Financiers. Editors. Men who gave speeches about sovereignty, decency, and the French way of life, but who spent their weekends in ways that would not survive a photograph. I have the photographs.

Tonight those photographs are worth considerably more than they were this morning.

What the Wall means

Everyone in this room believes that something has come to an end. The Americans believe they’ve prevailed. The Europeans believe they’ve been liberated. The three Russians in the room — I’ve files on all of them — feel humiliated.

They are all wrong.

What has ended is scarcity. For forty years, the material was locked behind borders: the files, the compromising material, and the records of who did what under which system and why. Now, that material is in motion. Archives are being opened, shredded, sold, and smuggled. The people who compiled it for forty years are suddenly without salaries, ideology, and with very good memories and the habits of people who understand that information is currency.

I took an intensive course in Russian three years ago. My tutor thought I was eccentric. He was not wrong, but he missed the point. I was not learning Russian to speak to Russians. I was learning Russian to become the person to whom Russians would naturally speak. There is a difference. One is a language skill. The other is a position.

By the end of this week, I’ll have made contact with four people in Moscow, two in Warsaw, and one in Budapest. I know what they have. I know what they’re worth. I also know which men in this room will pay the most to prevent certain information from becoming public, and which will pay equally well to ensure it does.

The Wall has not fallen. The market has opened.

Tomorrow

The champagne’s running out. The television is still on. Someone’s just given a speech about the inevitability of freedom — the kind of thing people say when they want to make contingency look like destiny.

I’m thinking about a college in Cambridge. An old acquaintance mentioned it — a place with money and a certain discretion, the English kind that mistakes reticence for virtue. There are people there who need what I have, and people whose careers would not survive the knowledge I have about them. The two categories overlap more than they’d like to admit.

My grandfather arrived in France with nothing, yet he built his position through patience, knowledge and the willingness to wait. My father understood that, at the right moment, politics is not ideology but arithmetic. After spending over twenty years in the streets, back rooms, and filing systems, I’ve learned that powerful men consistently underestimate the people they deem inferior.

Tomorrow, I’ll start making calls.

Tonight, I’m watching them celebrate the end of the world they understood. I feel nothing except a very clear sense of what comes next.

I was in Glasgow when the Wall fell.

A conference on nuclear safety — earnest papers, bad coffee, the kind of discussions that felt important because they were technical.

I was sipping my fifth pint of beer with a whisky chaser, becoming pleasantly drunk. The lounge bar of the pub, close to Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, was filled with smoke and noise as fellow revellers celebrated Glasgow Rangers’ 1–0 victory against Aberdeen. Someone had mistakenly switched the television channels from the one showing highlights of the match to the news. The majority of customers were not interested in seeing a crowd of people in Berlin knocking down a wall. A local wit shouted that smashing walls and windows was a regular occurrence during Glaswegian weekends. Thankfully, football reappeared on the screen.

Someone made a joke. Someone else said it would change everything.

I remember thinking that it wouldn’t. Not in the way people meant.

I spoke that afternoon with Anatoliy Andreyev. He was careful, measured, quietly angry about Chernobyl. We exchanged notes. Nothing more. The conversation stayed where it was meant to stay — technical, contained.

History passed in the background, unnoticed, like static.

I did not expect Matlock to change.

The town looked much as it had before, appearing orderly and polite with a quiet confidence in its own harmlessness. The same cafés. The same carefully preserved sense of having done right by history.

Only the details had shifted.

The foster parents remembered Ann well — perhaps too well. Dates were precise where they should have been vague. They’d recalled emotions in the language of reports rather than memory. They described her as remarkable, resilient, and lucky.

‘Lucky’ was the word that stayed with me.

When I asked about visitors, there was a brief pause. Then, the correction came. A clarification. ‘Yes, someone came once.’ A man from London. They thought he was official. He was interested in Ann’s progress. He was very polite.

They could not remember his name.

But they remembered his manners.

Later, walking back through the town, I realised what had unsettled me most. There was no sense that Ann had been hidden away or mistreated. On the contrary, everything suggested that she’d been well looked after. Observed. Not so much protected, but maintained.

It was as if her safety had always depended on someone else’s interests.

In retrospect, the visit from Friggington — because I’d been certain it had been him by then — did not feel intrusive. It felt confirmatory. A check, not a cause for concern. It was a reminder that someone had always been watching.

The foster parents believed themselves to be sincere. I do not doubt that they were. That may be the most disturbing part.

When I left Matlock this time, I realised something I had not before. Ann’s childhood was not a lie. It was a state of suspended animation.

Once you notice a holding pattern, it’s rarely accidental.

Horatio Friggington — Cambridge, 9 November 1989

It’s astounding how many events can occur in a single evening.

First, Berlin: the fall of the Wall, crowds cheering, Europe supposedly transforming.

Then the King Street pub fracas — a gross overreaction, as usual. I was delivering a speech about the death of socialism (which I thought was badly needed), and some humourless people took objection. The police took us to Parkside police station, along with Summers and a couple of others. I assume their careers will suffer — I’ll get my lawyer to call the Chief Superintendent.

But the truly noteworthy moment came when the tutor arrived at the station, looking both breathless and sheepish.

‘My lord,’ he said — my lord! — ‘I’m afraid your father passed away this evening.’

Just like that. No preamble. No ceremony. The title passed to me immediately, and the tutor granted leniency — no repercussions for the fracas, no rustication.

I felt nothing in particular, only practical considerations: estates, obligations, committee seats, and the inevitable demands on my time. I’ll make sure I enjoy my remaining months here in Cambridge.

There’s something mildly impressive about becoming a peer of the realm while the Berlin Wall collapses — two vast structures shifting at once.

I must dress appropriately tomorrow.

2. Jonathan Summers — Outer London, 9–11 November 1989

Unsent Letter to Myself

My dad has not stopped shouting; he learned about the Cambridge incident before I even reached home. My tutor had called. The college summoned me this morning, repeated the words ‘conduct unbecoming’, and then expelled me.

Dad exploded when I arrived this afternoon when I arrived from Cambridge.

‘Ruined!’ he kept shouting. ‘Do you understand? Ruined!’

I tried to explain that I was not drunk. I was merely standing too close to Friggington when the police arrived. It did not matter. It never does.

Horatio, of course, remained untouched — he had inherited the title, and the world suddenly revolved around him.

Meanwhile, I’m rewriting my future on the back of a train ticket.

I’m leaving India — anything to escape the weight of everyone’s expectations, including my own.

I don’t know if this is running away or running towards something — both, maybe.

3. Mpume Matabane — South Africa, 9 November 1989

Mpume — Age 11

We were rehearsing songs for the meeting when Gogo turned off the radio and sat down slowly, as if she were carrying something heavy in her chest.

Mama came in from the garden, and they began to whisper. Both of them looked worried, not excited, even though the announcer declared that something significant had occurred in Europe — a wall had fallen, and crowds were cheering.

To us, it did not sound hopeful; it sounded dangerous.

‘If Communism falls,’ Gogo said quietly, ‘they will say our struggle is Communist. The West will abandon us.’

Mama nodded the way she does when she’s remembering the years in exile: the poison training in Angola, the sabotage lessons in Mozambique, and the nights that she later told me she had prayed never to repeat.

Then Gogo took out the photograph.

I’d seen it before, but she’d never let me hold it: her husband — my grandfather — lying on the ground with his eyes open, and a man with cold eyes and no beard standing over him with one boot on his stomach and a rifle pointed lazily at the dust.

They always said he was a mercenary. One of the foreign ones.

Mama whispered, ‘History changes far away, but the men who killed him will not disappear.’

I did not understand Germany, Communism, or politics, but I understood that photograph.

The world could collapse anywhere, and it would still affect us.

4. Gillian Gordon — Perthshire, 9 November 1989

Gillian’s real diary — aged 12:

Uncle Virgo came today. Daddy said I had to ‘be entertaining’ because he’d received terrible news about Uncle Virgo’s sister in Italy. I tried, but the grown-ups all looked tense, as though they were holding their breath.

The house felt wrong — too quiet, as if everyone was waiting for something.

After dinner, they poured whisky and watched the news: a wall in Germany was coming down under blows from people with pickaxes. People stood atop it, hugging strangers and shouting; the scene resembled a festival. Neither Daddy nor Uncle Virgo looked particularly happy, though.

Daddy kept muttering, ‘This will trigger a chain reaction again.’

Uncle Virgo didn’t say much; he just stared, then asked, ‘Have you heard from Charles?’

I sat behind them, pretending to do my homework, but actually writing this.

The world feels like a book that someone is rewriting while we’re still reading it.

Charles — Berlin, 9 November 1989

I remember the cold first — a Berlin cold, sharp enough to make your lungs feel as though they were being interrogated. The crowds at Bornholmer Straße were ecstatic, drunk on the idea that history had suddenly taken a turn for the better. I should have been celebrating with them. Instead, my mind was torn between the cheering masses and the shadows lurking behind them.

A few hours earlier, I had confronted Friggington Senior, who had been feeding scraps of intelligence to the KGB through private channels — wrapped, of course, in the usual aristocratic language of ‘understandings’ and ‘mutual advantage’. When I challenged him, he dismissed me with a curled lip, treating me as though I were an inconvenient speck of grit on the polished floor of his dynasty.

But treachery is treachery, regardless of accent.

By the time the Wall began to open, I found myself standing beside Viktor Pavlov, who specialised in banter — the sly, knowing kind delivered by a man who always appeared to have read tomorrow’s headlines. He watched the Berliners cry, laugh and climb over history, smiling as if the evening were unfolding exactly as planned.

Behind us, almost hidden by the euphoria, the Aristocrat was being removed from Pavlov’s Lada Niva. He looked hollow, worn down by what Friggington had authorised in secret. Pavlov murmured, ‘The world is turning, Charles,’ as though I might toast the moment with him.

I didn’t, because I could see what he was doing — and what Friggington expected me to do.

The order from London was blunt: erase the problem, wipe the slate clean, close the book on a man who’d already given more than his life was worth.

I ignored it.

Despite Friggington’s frantic objections, which betrayed far more than he intended, I arranged for the Aristocrat to be smuggled to a safe facility. A place where he could rest, recover and perhaps recall who had abandoned him and who hadn’t.

For everyone else, Berlin that night was a celebration; for me, it was an audit.

Later, alone in my cramped room, I wrote only one line in my notebook: ‘History celebrates walls falling. It rarely acknowledges who gets pushed behind them.’

I still keep that notebook; some truths deserve to outlive the men who tried to bury them.

Laura — Northern France, 9 November 1989

We were always in the kitchen, because that was where the arguments lived. Papa had just lost his job at the mine, Nonno was visiting from Sicily, and the air smelled of moka coffee, coal dust, memories and unspoken fear.

I was ten and trying to follow a conversation about the future: Sicily versus France; family roots versus stability; what would happen to us now that the mine had shut down?

Then the news about Berlin broke. Everything stopped.

Nonno muttered, ‘This will destabilise everything — mark my words.’ Papa replied more softly, ‘There’ll be more crime before there’s more freedom.’ My mother just stared at the screen as though the images were arriving from another planet.

Nobody asked me what I thought. But I remember feeling relieved when Papa insisted that we were staying in France and that he was going to open a shop selling Italian and Sicilian products — I didn’t want to be uprooted. Visiting Nonna and Nonno in Sicily and spending long summer holidays there was fine, but all my friends and my French-Sicilian extended family were in the mining community where we lived.

Later that night, I watched the celebrations from the doorway: people climbing the Wall, crying, laughing and waving bottles in the air. It all felt impossibly distant; I didn’t understand the politics, but I felt the tremor: something opening, something ending.

I went to bed quietly relieved that our world — our tiny kitchen, our yellow curtains — would not change.

I had no idea that it already had.

Arti — St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago, 9 November 1989

As always before Carnival, the pan yard was alive with the sounds of steel, sweat, sunlight, laughter and arguments about arrangements. Pa played his double seconds with the intensity of a man fighting a personal war through music.

Then someone shouted from the entrance:

“The Berlin Wall has fallen!”

Everyone paused and listened as Pa squinted and tuned in to the crackling radio. He then launched into one of his political sermons about capitalism, imperialism and how nothing happening in Europe would affect the situation in the Caribbean. Someone laughed, striking up ‘Captain, the Ship is Sinking’, and the tension dissolved back into music.

I was only twelve, but I remember that moment clearly — not the news, which barely made sense, but Pa’s warning:

‘Play your music, boy, but keep your eyes open.’

That night, I wrote in my school notebook:

“One day, I’ll go to Britain. I’ll learn how their system works. Then I’ll use it.’

It sounds absurd now, but I meant it, and I still have that notebook. The handwriting is crooked, but the determination is clear.

Franco — Tuscany, 9 November 1989

Cosimo and I were deep in the woods at a clandestine training camp, which was exactly the kind of place two fifteen-year-olds should not have been. Anger had replaced childhood for both of us: my mother had been killed by a neo-fascist group and his village’s Resistance memorial had been destroyed by thugs who took pleasure in stirring up old hatreds.

We were learning sabotage techniques, the sort of thing older boys would talk about with bravado and no sense of consequence, when someone arrived breathlessly from the nearest village.

“The Wall is falling! East Germans are crossing.”

Everyone cheered, not for democracy — most of us barely understood it — but because the collapse of one order meant opportunity for another.

Cosimo whispered, ‘If the system falls, they’ll fall too.’ He meant the fascists.

But I had a different thought: systems don’t fall. They mutate.

I didn’t write it down – I wasn’t writing much of anything in those days – but I remember the exact sensation of the idea forming. It was a cold knot in the stomach; the realisation that our fight would follow us into adulthood, whether we liked it or not.

Some people remember 9 November 1989 as a time of freedom, but for me it was the night I realised that nothing ends cleanly.

I was going to write something simple — ‘Good to see you again today’ — and leave it at that.

But it isn’t simple, is it?

You’ve known Laura for much less time than I have, yet you seem to understand her in ways that make me uncomfortable.

I don’t dislike you.

In fact, that might be the problem.

You’re perceptive, careful and sharp without being cruel – qualities that attract people who are always colour-coded and defensive, like her.

When she walked into the group today, she looked at you first, not me.

It shouldn’t matter.

I keep telling myself that this is about professional alignment, about the group’s work and the unsettling direction in which some of these ‘influence threads’ are heading.

But honestly:

I am not as composed as I pretend to be.

You seem to care about her.

I need to know: is it because you sense she’s in danger?

Or do you simply care?

I won’t send this.

I’d never forgive myself for causing awkwardness.

But I needed to say it somewhere.

I came back from the meeting and tried to sleep, but it didn’t work. When the college grows quiet, the mind wanders.

Tonight, it went back to Oxford, to Gillian and to something I’ve never allowed myself to write down.

It began harmlessly enough: she’d heard about my talk, ‘Transnational Crime and the Evasion of Borders’, and turned up in the auditorium as if we were still friends who could drop into each other’s lives without consequences. Afterwards, there was dinner and wine, and the usual teasing. Gillian always had that talent — to make an evening feel brighter than it really was.

Arti had warned me about the party; her exact words were, ‘You two together after midnight is a structural risk.’ I laughed it off.

I shouldn’t have.

I’d just returned from Paris, still carrying traces of Arianne’s dry humour and those ridiculous little herbal mixtures she insists are ‘traditional’. I don’t know what possessed me — curiosity, mischief, or maybe something darker — but I slipped a few drops of it into both our drinks.

A joke, I thought. A test, perhaps. I don’t know anymore.

The night that followed was… intense, beautiful even, charged in a way that I had not intended and yet did not resist.

Gillian, who has always lived at the crossroads of her own shifting desires, leaned into it with an honesty that caught me off guard.

I remember the morning after too clearly: the way her expression softened, as if she were already replaying the night in her mind, and the way mine shuttered closed.

She reached for me, but I stepped back, not dramatically, just enough.

We never spoke about it, not once. She read my silence as rejection, and I let her — cowardice masquerading as boundary-setting.

Tonight the guilt came flooding back — not because of what happened, but because I know she would have understood the truth if I’d offered it.
She would have rolled her eyes, scolded me for my recklessness, and then laughed about it over coffee two days later.

But I denied her even that.
I denied us the dignity of clarity.

Now every time we cross paths — in a corridor, a committee meeting, or the impossible closeness of Cambridge — the air tightens.
A friction neither of us names.

And now, reading what I wrote in the memo, hearing Charles’s comments in the margins… I realise something unsettling:

I am comfortable analysing the distortions of entire nations,
but I cannot face the distortion I caused in a single relationship.

The Background Paper warns of inherited loyalties and unspoken assumptions.

So does my past with Gillian.

And both seem to be circling back at the same time.

I don’t know what that means.
Not yet.

But tonight Cambridge feels colder than it should.

The others think in people; I think in systems.
It isn’t enough to say Keane might be compromised.
Compromise is an outcome, not a motive.

FARCE – the Worshipful Company of the Friends Around Russia and Central Europe – has always been presented as a joke with a drinks budget.
But the joke covers a mechanism: Brodsky’s money, Friggington’s access, Butler Britain’s accountants, and a trail of deregulated nostalgia stretching back to the 1980s.
Everything smells faintly of Thatcher — the worship of “enterprise,” the sell-off of responsibility, the belief that greed and governance could share the same bed.

Brodsky knows more about Friggington than he lets on.
Why else keep the boy-minister as a front while surrounding him with Rizzo’s runners?
Why else demand that Charles “come back” unless it serves a purpose bigger than nostalgia?
Maybe it’s not to control Charles at all, but to expose Friggington and get him out of the way.
If so, for whom?
And why now?

The Mossad angle doesn’t fit neatly either.
Are they confusing the CIA, feeding the SVR, or running a rogue clean-up of their own Berlin mistakes?
A few ex-KGB technocrats sold them stories thirty years ago.
Now those same men are selling the stories back to London with different endings.
Who profits from the remix?

And then there’s the wider question no one wants to touch:
are we missing the whole point — who actually wants to upset Europe’s stability and socio-economic model, and where does the UK fit in?
Was the rot homegrown all along?
Did it start not in Moscow or Langley, but in Whitehall — when Thatcher turned the market into a moral code and called it freedom?

I need to stop thinking of Charles and Laura as variables and start thinking of them as witnesses.
The question is not whether they are clean.
The question is what they have seen that the rest of us haven’t.

I printed his words before reading them twice.
Paper feels safer than a screen — as if ink can’t lie the way circuits do.

He says not everything is mine to tell.
That’s Charles in eight words: a confession shaped like an apology.

Berlin again. The ledger. Names I was never meant to know.
If it’s true the Americans doctored the records, then every alliance since has been a performance —
and we are the understudies still reciting their lines.

Mossad wants what he might still hold —
a fragment that proves Washington authorised something it swore it hadn’t.
He says they’re wrong. Or half-right. Which, in Charles’s language, means entirely true.

And Friggington. Of course. The father in the hotel,
the son pretending history began the day he inherited a title.
Charles never said it outright, but the hatred between them smells of inheritance.

He warns me not to ask more — it would make me a target.
As if silence were protection. As if ignorance were innocence.

I can’t tell Arti. Not yet.
He would analyse it, measure the syntax, cross-reference the metadata.
Gillian would turn it into an argument.
Gaia would make a joke and then regret it.

So I’ll keep this one folded inside the diary.
No code. No encryption. Just handwriting —
the oldest form of secrecy we have left.

Cambridge, late evening. Laura sat cross-legged on a makeshift bed — a thin mattress on the floor, a borrowed armchair in one corner, and a side table with half a bottle of Sicilian red. Her belongings from Oxford were already a week overdue. She suspected her ex had found a way to interfere, just to remind her he could.

The apartment was bare, shadows stretching across the walls. The silence made her think of her parents, gone too soon, and of her brother still in Sicily. A few tears came unbidden as she opened the notebook on her lap.

Pen poised, glass within reach, Laura began to write.

Breakfast in the Den. Sausages and eggs from Toni’s, sent up by dumb waiter. Charles grumbled about croissants, poured the tea as if it were strategy. Ordinary things, yet nothing ordinary about this room.

Gillian. The butterfly. Too many whispers, too many entanglements. I still regret Paris — the conference on climate and crime. Too much wine, her eyes across the table, her move, her room. For me, curiosity, a passing romance. For her, the start of something. I regret it because she clings, and I cannot. Worse, she spoke of Angus with careless ease. Cruelty, or calculation? She is not my taste.

22 February 2014. Cambridge.

Charles. Fork in hand, he talks about Summers and St. John-Smith as if it were football. He shows fragments, never the whole. He says he has suspicions, not evidence. I want to trust, but doubt lingers. Berlin still haunts him — the slip with James Friggington’s name. I’ve asked Arti and Dmitri to search the Stasi files. If they find nothing, then my suspicion of Charles can finally die.

Family. Ghosts never leave. My parents most of all. The debts, the men at the door, their deaths. Every thread I pull — Friggington, Summers, Gillian — leads back to the same violence dressed as business.

He winked when I teased him about Sanja. I smiled back. For a heartbeat it felt normal. Then the ghosts returned.

I regret Paris. I regret Gillian. I regret not telling Charles the whole truth. But above all, I regret that regret itself (has become my constant companion).

Charles hasn’t said much. That’s how I know he’s angry. Not the operatic kind that some men perform when they want the room to listen — but the coiled, quiet anger of someone who just saw the truth scratched onto a gravestone.

Ann’s diary wasn’t meant for anyone else to read. But someone had to.

She was twelve. The writing shifts from neat loops to panic scratches, as if her thoughts were trying to outrun the page. There are drawings. A map of the house. A list of things she missed about her sisters. One page just says: "Don’t forget who I am." Underlined three times.
